Throughout Eminem's career his lyrics and rhymes have sparked many controversies. I remember when I was younger hearing on the radio that Eminem, also known as "Slim Shady" was being banned from some of the local stations. This banning made everyone want to listen to the "forbidden" music. An example of how his lyrics could be controversial is the song "Guilty Conscience". He says, "Meet Eddie, twenty-three years old/Fed up with life and the way things are going,/he decides to rob a liquor store." Eminem touched issues in some peoples' lives that are usually left unsaid. Eminem did not listen to the critics and conservatives and still writes controversial lyrics. For example, in his most resent album "Relapse" he uses the term "f*ggot" .This word is highly insulting and derogatory. He was quoted in an interview with the Metro Times saying, "I really don't know. There are other artists that have used the word 'f*ggot' in their work... So why, then, when I say it is it any different?"

I really like how you mentioned his response to the criticism: 'There are other artists that have used the word 'f*ggot' in their work... So why, then, when I say it is it any different?" People in the world today think that if one person does something and gets it away with it, then it's okay to keep doing it. When people begin to hear derogatory remarks like this in songs, as if they're just part of the everyday English language, they're going to begin using them more and more often. Words like f*ggot shouldn't be used so regularly. It's a sensitive word to a lot of people. I think that censorship needs to be a lot more strict.
ReplyDeleteI should have concluded my blog more clearly because my point was supposed to not focus on the term itself but to acknowledge his bravery with using offensive terms. Although I believe that the term f*ggot is extremely offensive and should not be used;I disagree with enforcing censorship. Ask yourself if we enforced censorship, who would make the distention between appropriate or inappropriate? Censorship is a slippery slope because some people would side with liberal minded people and other on the more conservative side.
